Converting to Black and White

There are three way converting your shot into black and white using photoshop.

Grayscale (go image>mode>grayscale)
Channel mixer (go image>adjustment>channel mixer)
Desaturation (go image>adjustment>Hue/saturation)

Grayscale
The Grayscale method is a straight away change the image into B&W by just
simply clicking on the grayscale button.This is the simple way of turning your
photos into B&W.But not much adjustment you can do when using grayscale.

Desaturation
This method also similar with Grayscale but not so very straight foward as the
grayscale way. By using the slider on the saturation. Slide it to the left Negative (-)
to desaturated the color. Using this method also you can control the RGB by changing
it on a drop down menu on top of the Hue/Saturation bar window.
Channel Mixer
The best way i've discovered in converting your shot into black and white
is by using Channel Mixer where you can still control the RGB event after it has been
converted into monochrome. You can adjust the Red, Blue and Green in making the
image more punchy B&W shot. When adjusting the RGB, make sure the number as
close as it get to 100. so that you will not blown so much on the highlight and also
the shadow.

Do a little bit of experiment then you will understand it better, just make you save it
as a new image in different file so that you will not change the original image.

Level Correction

Level is one of the important basic adjustment you can use to correct images that

under expose or over expose. To open level, go to.. image>adjustment>level(click), shortcut key ctrl+L (Window). It will open A histogram box where it has a slider below the histogram triangle shape three different color..Black, gray and white. You can use the slider in the middle to adjust the desire exposure level. Most images slightly under expose work better

Keyboard Shortcut

One of the trick in easy finding those commands of photoshop is using shortcut key.

A fast way to open them, the command such us level, saturation, color balance, save and few

Others. These are the most used shortcuts of the photoshop command .

Note: PC use "ctrl" key. While Mac using "command"

Ctrl+ S = Save

Ctrl+Shift+S = Save As

Ctrl+C = Copy

Ctrl+V = Paste

Ctrl+A = Select All

Ctrl+L = Level

Ctrl+B = Color Balance

Ctrl+U =Hue/ Saturation

Ctrl+Alt+I = Image Size

Ctrl+shift+alt+I = File info

These are the single letters access for toolbox icons.

If you hover the cursor on the toolbox icon, name of the icon will

Pop up and the letters in the bracket ( ) is the shortcut letters of the icons.

B= Brush tool

C= Crop tool

S= Clone Stamp tool

V= Move tool

M= Rectangular Marquee tool

L= Polygonal Lasso tool

G= Paint Bucket tool

Z= Zoom tool

T= Text Tool

O= Dodge tool

I= Eye dropper tool

E= Eraser tool

H= Hand tool

Hidden tools on the tool bar.
Click Long on the icon to open hidden icon.

Red Eye Reduction

This is one of the basic things to learn in photoshop. Family photos, friends, animal shots or may be your client that shots at night using flash can easily get red eye. The Red Eye tool removes red eye in flash photos of people and white or green reflections in flash photos of animals. Open Photo in photoshop and using symbol magnifying glass available on side tool bar zoom in the red eye to get better view then. Select Red Eye tool. (Can be found on the side tool bar where the symbol is an eye, If you cannot see the symbol of an eye try to find the healing tool where the symbol of bandage. Click long to open option and click red eye reduction)

Click in the red eye. If you are not satisfied with the result, undo the correction, set one or more of the following options in the options bar, and click the red eye again:

Pupil Size - Sets the size of the pupil (dark center of the eye).

Darken Pupil - Sets the darkness of the pupil.

Red eye is caused by a reflection of the camera flash in the subject’s retina. You’ll see it more often when taking pictures in a darkened room because the subject’s iris is wide open. To avoid red eye, use the camera’s red eye reduction feature. Or, better yet, use a separate flash unit that you can mount on the camera farther away from the camera’s lens.

Hi!! welcome to my page about learning basic image editing using Adobe Photoshop.
In order for you to learn it properly, you must have Adobe Photoshop Software install
in your computer. Either Adobe photoshop 7.0/CS or CS2.
